German Death Announcement
In pious, prayerful memory of the virtuous young man Martin Auer, Gartmeier's [?; occupation] son from Högling, Landsturm soldier in the 1st Bavarian Infantry Guard Regiment, 1st Company, who, on 31 March 1917 and in the fair age of 28 years, died a hero's death for the Fatherland in Romania.
Your grave is in distant enemy country
It's a difficult pain for us,
But take this word as our pledge:
Your grave will not be forsaken.
Every evening, when the bells hum
Our spirit will move there lovingly
And prayerfully and with pious mind
Strew flowers of devotion on your hero's grave.
