Description Lithograph print by Theophile Alexandre Steinlen

A French infantryman goes over the top through a gap in the barbed wire into No Man's Land from a front line trench, one of his comrades standing in the trench trying to persuade him otherwise. From the accompanying text it appears the standing soldier has promised another comrade a German helmet as a trophy and so is embarking on a small raid single-handedly.

Caption on print: ah! J'ai messe; "t'y vas! t'es pas louf?"; "Y a pas - j'ai promis un casque boche à la p'tite homme du 3e"
